Susan Stamberg On This is NPR: "Always put the listener first" has been NPR's mantra since its inception in 1970. Now celebrating its 40th anniversary, NPR's programming attracts over 27 million listeners, from 897 stations nationwide, each week. To commemorate the 40-year milestone – in addition to quietly changing its name from National Public radio to simply NPR – a new self-reflective book has been released. This is NPR: The First Forty Years chronicles NPR’s storied history, featuring dozens of photos, essays and original reporting by a who’s who of NPR staff and correspondents. Among them: Morning Edition Special Correspondent Susan Stamberg – herself a 38-year veteran of NPR – and the recipient of every major award in broadcasting. She joins us to talk about her nearly four decades with the network.
