This is my follow up to my onair comment/question about rush hour service ending too early. Rather than needing to add to the service, perhaps it just needs to start later. Using the 84 bus as an example again, evening rush hour starts at 410, arguably not as heavy a commuter time as around 630715. Simply postponing the start of this commuter route by 1/2 hour would mean the last bus would be late enough for commuters from downtown to leave work as late as 6pm, or to even run a couple of errands after work by pushing the last bus from 647 to 717. I know from talking to friends who rely on commuter rail and looking at other bus line schedules that this is a system wide issue. The current schedules seem based on commuting patterns from 30 years ago or longer. THE BIGGER ISSUE MBTA customer need to demand that the State House buckle down and come up with realistic funding measures. And Western Massachusetts constituents need to acknowledge that it is no less fair for them to help fund the system for the revenue center of the state than it is for MBTA communities to pay taxes and tolls which benefit road maintenance in the western region. We are a COMMONwealth.
