On the "Rupert Murdoch built a media empire, who am I to question what he does" remark
I think that that is the big problem. Content comments such as this coming from one who would credit himself as so genuinely journalistic is frightening and part of the big "media" problem.
Also the comment on the write in who mentioned that they do not have a television but instead get their news from the internet...and the remark "Well where do you think the internet gets their news from?" is also blemished.
For instance, I just finished watching an in depth interview with Julian Assange, Amy Goodman from DemocracyNow.org and Slavoj Zizek. What television corporate media outlet has interviewed Julian Assange? Perhaps I missed it. What corporate television media outlet has reported on the Egyptian uprising consistently? What television media outlet has reported on the privatization of our military, our prisons, our space program, extraordinary rendition, the winter soldier, and so much more? In depth reporting and continuous uptodate coverage that even when the corporate owned media wont touch the facts of an unpopular subject, person, peoples the on line news from Democracy Now is a staple and it dissects the issues rather than side tracking the public with stupidity.
Wakeup. The television news is as your guest put it...an empire but not one that all of us choose to live in. Thank goodness those of us who are not part of the business as usual empire, the empire of denial and misconception have a choice. I only have basic cable service for a television because when I tried to only subscribe to the internet without television service I was informed by the corporation that it would cost me more money than if I subscribed to both.
Week In Review
The News of the World no longer. The victim of public backlash over allegations of phone hacking and bribing of police, Rupert Murdoch's publishing empire shuts down the muckraking British tabloid. And speaking of questionable media conduct, as the Casey Anthony trial captivates the nation’s attention, cable news hosts like Nancy Grace get a little too invested. Plus, James “Whitey” Bulger pleads not guilty; debt-ceiling talks come down to the wire in Washington and in the shadow of summer revelry – a spate of shootings and stabbings on the streets of Boston, as the town of Wayland is rocked by its first homicide in more than two decades. And, “thumbs up, thumbs down” on the President’s Twitter Town Hall and much more. We’re joined by political analyst Avi Nelson, Boston Globe columnist Joanna Weiss and Boston Herald reporter Dave Wedge.
