Anything that distracts a drivers attention while driving is dangerous. Texting requires both visual as well as physical manipulation that can dangerously distract a driver. Regardless of legislation people will continue to engage in dangerous behavior. Operating a radio or a GPS, making a cell phone call or even engaging in a heated conversation with a passenger has been shown to significantly increase reaction times. While outlawing texting is a good idea I dont think that outlawing radio use, handsfree cellphone use or GPS use will fly and that is almost as dangerous. It should be a required part of drivers ed to learn how to multitask safely, to maintain situational awareness while performing other tasks such as tuning a radio or placing a hands free cellphone call or even drinking coffee or other beverage while driving. I am a pilot and the most dangerous time in flying is landing where one needs to maintain visual awareness of other aircraft, talk to traffic control, obey and confirm directions and frequently changes in directions while often being required to change radio frequencies. Simultaneously the pilot needs to reconfigure the craft for landing, follow a check list that includes paying attention to charts, speed, engine RPM, fuel mixture, prop settings, heading, wind direction and altitude as well as the aircraft on the ground. Pilots are trained to multitask, drivers should also be required to have multitasking training as legislating restrictions in activity is ineffective in changing behaviour.

Why is it “Occupy Wall Street” and not “Occupy Washington”? Both parties share responsibility for the economic problems people face. Corporate interests are often not in line with the majority of Americans so why should Washington enable Wall Street? Our economic problems are not based on a tax system but on earnings demographically. This is where Wall Street is at odds with the American People. And it’s also where Washington is at odds with the American People. Senators are funded by corporate money which means individual interests have not been represented and, as a result, incomes are less than are necessary domestically. When income supports cost for basic services then society is equitable. When cost for basic services exceeds income then there is a problem. We have good people working who are homeless. American Citizens on Social Security lose something each month in terms of purchasing power for basic necessities. Corporations continue to profit and receive government assistance when their own bad practices threaten the bottom line. There is no such assistance for individuals and no talk of wage reform that would bolster the purchasing power of the majority. The United States has been advertised as “the land of opportunity”. But who is that “opportunity” for? Elected officials have a fiduciary responsibility to their constituents, not just a few of them, all of them EQUALLY. The cost of living is high here it is because our prices groceries, medicine, etc. are high as a result of pricing by corporations. And our ability to purchase has been overtaken by that high pricing. In addition to inflation low wages, debt, outsourcing, and relocation of industry have caused the crisis we face now. Is it acceptable for American corporations to search for cheaper workers internationally in order to avoid hiring American Citizens? A capitalist might say yes but a “real” representative of the people would say no. Instead of outsourcing labor it would be appropriate for corporations to lower the prices here in order to bring minimum wage in line with the cost of living. Bring the prices down. Or bring wages up. Government is elected to help America thrive and that cannot be done by funding wealthy people in hopes that they will be generous. Capitalism is not about generosity and that is where Washington needs to be a real mediator instead of just a corporate enabler. “Special interest" money that funds elections has often prompted lawmakers to represent their financiers in favor of their constituents. How can this process be redirected? Removing corporate money from elections, limiting corporate lobbying access, and personal campaign contributions are a few possibilities. But we also need to place higher standards of accountability on our elected officials in order to ensure they act, for the majority, in a fiduciary manner.

I hope this comment isnt too late as I tuned in late. Im in the top 1 and there is zero or negative correlation with my tax rate and my job creation. If anything, I am less likely to hire more with lower taxes. First, I make way more than I can spend now. Second, a low tax rate means that if I make a mistake, I lose more on an aftertax basis.

Experiments that subject animals to music might give more interesting results if the animal has a known rhythmic sense, such as birds dancing chicken!. Dance is a primal human urge that many animals seem not to share. I love both classical and rock. Each has its psychological place and space.

I think that the tone of the media around the Occupy Wall street has been grossly unfair and patronizing, The sad characterization of these people as naive, unfocused and entitled demeans them. Those who describe them as such should be embarrassed. I expected more fairness and less dismissiveness from NPR affiliates. The frequent comment that this group has no clear agenda misses the point entirely. Their apparent lack of simple talking points reflects the short attention span of the media. This is a group of people who understand that our Cartesian approach to solving a single problem without addressing the system as a whole is futile and dangerous. The issue these people are protesting is the fact that our culture and our government are based at the deepest philosophical levels on corrupt, archaic and untenable premises. These people are protesting our consumer culture, they are protesting the subjugation of the local and the personal and the diverse to corporate centralized homogenization. They are protesting the death of democracy in America where political influence is openly for sale, where Americas foreign policies are clearly based around business interests and not ideals. If the business of America is business, then America will always be controlled by the bottom line and the bottom line does not care about clean air, the disabled or the poor. These protesters are shining a light on the crucible that is heating up around the disempowered in America and abroad. Public schools are suffering, medicare and social security are under attack, unions are being undermined, the supreme court has opened the gates for corporate manipulation of our electoral system, and it is suggested by Republicans that even fewer regulations will help America when a lack of regulation helped banks and investment firms to nearly sink our entire economy in the first place. In todays climate, how dare anyone protest increasing taxes on the rich when 1 percent controls 50 percent of our wealth? You cant expect this Occupy Wall Street group to focus on one issue such as crushing student debt, when what they are really protesting is EVERYTHING about the way our country functions today. This is a generation that sees movies like "The Corporation", "Food Inc.", "Sicko", "The End of Suburbia " and even major Hollywood films like "Syriana" that address the problems of our world through the lens of complex systems thinkers. In broad scientific terms our world is most likely facing a major bifurcation event, and something like that cant be stopped except with a shift in our entire paradigm. I was listening about the Iowa debate this morning and I heard everyone talk all about the candidates even one that wasnt there, except Ron Paul. His name was never mentioned. And he won the debate according to many. Not one mention. Why? I have seen this before. This is an intentional snub and an attempt to disconnect Dr Paul from the public. It is happening all over. Todays show with Jane Fonda was up setting to put it mildly. Diane, for the support and aid Jane Fonda the provided the Vietnam Army, she should have been shot. During her visit to the Hotel Hilton prison, Fonda met with the American prisoners shaking their hands as she went from one prisoner to another. The prisoners, during the handshake, slipped her a small piece of paper with their social security numbers hoping she would get them to the American authorities. In stead, after greeting the prisoners, Traitor Jane, handed over the slips of paper to the Viet Cong. I hope and pray the youth of today never forget her disloyal, traitorous behavior to our military men and women that served during the Vietnam War. Frank Correira

On the August 1st Rehm show I listen to most callers expressing their displeasure with our Congressional leaders. A caller mentioned the Pres. Reagan Bush lower our taxes which greated job and a robust economy. If one looks at our history they will come to understand that Pres. Reagn big business started the decline of our working class standard of living by out using the tax breaks for the purpose of sourcing jobs. Pres. Bush, along with his tax breaks and deregulation of the market banks, created a false economy that was doomed to crumble after a few years. Our congressional State leaders want the America worker to sacrifice what they have worked and paid into so our leaders can go on supporting the Illegal Immigrants and undocuments students, which will help to reduce the American workers standard of living. Im an ex con and I did decades in state and federal prisons as well as several county jails. I applaud the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision that California must reduce its severely crowded prison population. The prison conditions there are shameful and deplorable and it reflects executive government incompetence that certainly warrants addressing. The irony, the paradox in corrections, is that the prison guards are as violent against inmates as the most violent inmates, the worst of the worst inmates, the element that kills fellow inmates. Violent rogue prison personnel in prisons throughout the U.S. actually control the prisons and not the executive prison leadership, and this element has no problem killing an inmate they have a beef with. Threats and violence dissuade benign prison personnel from ratting on this element, and the medical examiner will concoct a cause of death that will insulate the killers from suspicion and prosecution. Historically prison guards have been the scum of the planet, and this supreme court action was long over due...

This morning I listened to your interview of the 38 year old woman who, years ago, was convicted of first degree murder for shooting and killing her father who raped her regularly, from age 8 to 18, when she "finally" killed him for turning on her sister and doing the same...for one night. Apparently, she quickly learned of her father taking her sister to a locked room in their house and raped her and promptly took decisive action. I applaud her actions and I would have done the same. Its a shame that she didnt have an older brother who would have had the nerve to kill him years earlier, when he was raping the the older sister. In the early ninties, I incurred 3 1820 year prison sentences for three attempted murders of a couple of gay steroid freaks I shot in front of a Huntington Avenue gym in Boston I was a member of and attempted to enter to do my daily workout. They knew my workout schedule and my demonstrated contempt for gay gym rats who fail to retain this. I go to the gym to, in part, enjoy the women, and the homos, many of whom have invaded the heterosexual gyms, fail to understand that it is not acceptable to be stalking and staring at guys. So, they thought they would intimidate me as I entered the gym one early Friday evening. When I called one of them a faggot, the roid rage erupted and the 250 lb steroid freak jumped me. Big mistake. Out comes the handgun and within seconds three people are on the ground...during the Boston evening rush hour. I did 12 years and 8 months for that shooting.

Re Taxes and Tax cuts... For too long, the US has been using the 250,000 mark as the cutoff point for tax breaks, but this doesnt take into account cost of living raises and the fact that many small business owners or independent entrepreneurs fall into this tax bracket. The middleclass tax bracket needs to be recalculated, and the taxes on the middle and other more economically challenged households given a breakespecially considering the wall street bailouts. Bill Gates and other billionaires have been challenging Congress to tax the rich more aggressively perhaps a flat tax is the way to approach a more equitable solution for all Americans...?

First, Hamas has stated time aand again that it would accept a two state solution within the 67 borders w/an e. jerusalem capitol if the palistiean people vote for it in a refarendum. Second, Likud,s charter, you know who they are, the rulers of Israel, states that there can never be a Plaistiean state in the west bank AND that it is the natural right of "the Jewish people" to continue to expand and build new settlements in both teh west bank AND the Golan Heights. Thats like quyestioning Obamas legitimacy as president beecause he didnt win North Dakota. In fact, israel and the US demanded that there be an election. So their PLO lackeys held one. Hamas then won that election by over 60 of the vote. It doesnt really matter whether Hamas won Omaha OR South Bend THEY WON THE ELECTION. As to the question of whether Israel should define itself as a "jewish state" , let me say, I am jewish and if the US defined itself as a christian nation", I would take uup arms. Or whatt if Mississippi defined itself as a "white state"? There are approximately 1,000,000 Arab/Israelis living in Israel who almost all either muslim with some being christian. What about them?

This military General was not only disrespectful in his attacks but he was vulgar. He attacked and humiliated the President and the Vice President. His comments when he joked about "Biden"? "Bite Me!", and other "fingergestures" are totally inappropriate. These is not the respect of a professional in charge of thousands of soldiers, and he sets a very bad example with his behaviour. The male speaker on your show was making many excuses for the Generals comments, but the fact is that the reporter and the General signed off on the interview that he gave. When you have a bad egg like this, you have to get rid of them, otherwise, the entire military will suffer. If Obama has any selfrespect, he will fire the General. Saying that it will be hard to replace him is ridiculous, there are many fine military men who are capable of fulfilling this position and respecting those he reports to.

After listening to the doctors on your show talk about Vitamin D and how it is supposedly not able to be produced by the Sun. I would like to refer you to a Sci Am article that was done several years before this pointing out the importance of Vitamin D in cancer suppression and actually saying that 15 minutes of Sun exposure a day would help give you the Vitamin D you need. http//www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=celldefensesandthesunshinevitamin Please note this article was published back in 2007 November. The article goes on to talk about precursors to Vitamin D and whether or not they also help in cancer suppression. It is important to note these precursor chemicals also suppress the bodys inflammation response from sun burns. This is why we do not puff up like balloons from a sunburn.

If the state passes a law that it is illegal for a person to kill another person, the state should not have a policy that has a person kill another person. This is with respect to the death penalty deaths that happen during "police actions" and "wars" is another discussion.

What are the current theories of free will, given what we know about the material world and current theories neurobiology, evolution the origin of life. I enjoyed the image of your guest pondering the cool disregard of a buffalo, the constant feedback of being aware of anthropomorphizing and using that awareness to get a better grasp on the subject and as a result improving ones own self awareness. Cutting to the chase are we more than wet machines?
