Author Junot Diaz takes on natural disasters to task in a new essay written for Boston Review. "Apocalypse" delves into the catastrophic, the disastrous, the natural forces that wreak havoc and destruction on helpless victims and communities. Catastrophes are "social disasters" -- horrific events that peel back the veneer of calm, organized society, to reveal the dysfunction and injustice lurking below.
