Author Junot Diaz takes on natural disasters to task in a new essay written for Boston Review. "Apocalypse" delves into the catastrophic, the disastrous, the natural forces that wreak havoc and destruction on helpless victims and communities. It is up to those of us living in comfort and security, Diaz says, to help shore up the places in the world where destitution and deprivation are daily facts of life. Catastrophes are "social disasters" -- horrific events that peel back the veneer of calm, organized society, to reveal the dysfunction and injustice lurking below.
