Saving the Central Falls Library
When the town of Central Falls, RI filed for bankruptcy last August, the state appointed a "receiver" to come in, look at revenues and expenses, and make the hard choice to streamline municipal operations. One of the items on the chopping block: the Adams Memorial Library.
But, when the receiver gave the go-ahead to close the library down, something strange happened: volunteers showed up, residents streamed in and the library stayed open. A New York Times article was enough to convince actor Alec Baldwin to donate money to help the cause. And now, the 101-year-old library will operate completely independently of the city of Central Falls.
