In the early 1990's, those working in law enforcement could face discrimination, harassment, and even get fired for being openly gay. In 1991, a 22-year-old Northampton police officer, Preston Horton, founded the Gay Officers Action League of New England. GOAL/NE became a support group or gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender law enforcement, and civilian federal, state, and local employees. Only a handful of people showed up to their first meeting, but over time, GOAL/NE became a very politically active, thriving organization that offers support to its members, and training to the criminal justice professionals across New England.
