Don't Mess with Tanya
When the 2010 Census numbers arrived earlier this year, it became official: ranks of non-white Boston city residents have swelled to near 50 percent. By all accounts, this statistic will only increase in the decades ahead.
New communities of migrant and minority populations have cropped up, completely changing - and challenging - old established neighborhoods in the Hub. Dorchester native Ken Tangvik has been there to witness it all. He established the Hyde Square Task Force in Jamaica Plain to help the youth and the displaced in those neighborhoods gain a foothold in the city's evolving landscape. Now a professor at Roxbury Community College, Tangvik has written a new collection of short stories about the young, minority experience in Boston's "barrios," Don't Mess with Tanya.
