Curbing the Crime Wave
Four people were fatally shot and 15 others seriously wounded after a series of shootings and stabbings in Boston over Fourth of July weekend. It’s a wave of violent crime that comes only one week after a 4-year-old boy was shot in the back at a public park- caught in gang related crossfire. Unfortunately, this tops the violence that marked 2010’s Fourth of July weekend, when one man was shot dead and six others were injured in shootings throughout Boston.
Last year, Rev. Bruce Wall, a Dorchester scholar, pastor, and former police officer; and Tina Chery, founder and president of the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute, joined us to discuss the dramatic spike in violence in 2010 that stained the city. They return today to talk through what has -and hasn’t- happened in the past year to make true inroads in reducing crime.
What should the Mayor of Boston be doing to stem violence? As citizens, what is our responsibility to help end this violence? What is at the root of this recent crime wave? Should we legalize drugs? Is it the ailing economy? Is this about gun control? Poverty? Failed leadership in our homes? Classrooms? Community? Leave a message at our facebook page.
