Casinos for the Mashpee Wampanoag a Crap Shoot?
One of the three casino licenses is reserved for a federally recognized Native American tribe, — which basically means the Wampanoag in Massachusetts. Getting a license isn’t easy. First, they need to buy the land, then they need to pass a local referendum authorizing gambling, and from there the Wampanoag need to negotiate how much of the casino’s cash goes back into the Commonwealth. If the Wampanoag can’t accomplish this by July 2012, the license is up for grabs. Getting this license is one thing- but the toll it’s taking on the tribe is another.
