Gold Star Children
There are 20,000 kids in the U.S. who have lost a mother or father serving in the military. For family at home, young or old, the loss is painful, immediate, and profoundly life-altering.
After losing her own father in the Vietnam War as a young child, filmmaker Mitty Mirrer set out to make a documentary film about the lives of Gold Star children like her. What she found was a community of sons, daughters, and widows working through hardship and enriching each others' lives. When the loss of a loved one in service created a vacuum, fellow families and military personnel moved to fill in the gaps. Mirrer's film, Gold Star Children, follows these families as they honor their loved ones and live new lives in their memory.
Guests:
Cierra Becker: a Gold Star child whose father was killed while serving in the US military in Iraq
Crystal Becker: the widow of the late Staff Sergeant Shane Becker. She has two girls, Cierra and Cheyenna, and is raising both of them in Texas.
Mitty Mirrer: producer and director of the film "Gold Star Children" whose father was killed in the line of duty in Vietnam.
