Nom de Plume
In her new book Nom de Plume: A (Secret) History of Pseudonyms, writer Carmela Ciuraru looks at a handful of authors who have written under the protection of a pen name. For the sisters Bronte, hiding behind another identity was a way to get published, allowing them to break through gender barriers. For other writers, creating an alter ego gives them license to write outside the literary box they’ve penned themselves into. This hour we’ll look at what’s in a name and the relationship between self creation and creating.
Guests:
Carmela Ciuraru, author of Nom de Plume: A (Secret) History of Pseudonyms.
Joshua Gaylord, author of Hummingbirds under his birth name, wrote The Reapers Are the Angels under the pseudonym Alden Bell.
Deborah Reed, author of Carry Yourself Back to Me under her birth name and A Small Fortune under her pseudonym Audrey Braun.
