Dr. Tim Lepore: A Doctor Without Boundaries
As part of WGBH's focus week on health care, we're talking with New York Times health and science reporter Pam Belluck about her forthcoming book, Isand Practice. Belluck profiles Dr. Tim Lepore, who has been treating the people on Nantucket for nearly 30 years. Dr. Lepore is all things to all people: surgeon, tick expert, unofficial psychologist, accidental homicide detective and occasional veterinarian. From hedge fund mangers to the guy who trims hedges, he treats them all. If you can't pay your bills, cookies, yard work, and lobsters will do. For this island doctor, house calls often work in reverse, with the ill and ailing dropping by his home at all hours. This is a doctor who is essential to this community, particularly in a time when medical care is increasingly costly and impersonal.
GUESTS:
Pam Belluck, New York Times health and science reporter, author of Island Practice
