Award-winning poet, writer, and educator, Sapphire is the author of Push, the novel which inspired the film Precious. In this interview with Maria Hinojosa, Sapphire talks about the making of Precious, what Push is really about, and her next novel.
María on her interview with Sapphire:
"I met Sapphire at the Miami Book Fair where she was presenting her novel Push and I was on my book tour for Raising Raul. I still remember the day she and I met...and I must say I never forgot Precious Jones, the illiterate 16 year-old young woman Sapphire portrays in her novel. Later I moved to Harlem, the place where Push takes place. When I jog around my neighborhood I pass Hotel Theresa and the image of Precious flashes into my mind. I was deeply touched when Push became the major motion picture Precious and was nominated for an Academy Award for best picture. This season I had the privilege of interviewing Sapphire on One-on-One. In this intimate (and rare) interview, Sapphire opens her heart and life story to our viewers.”
