About History Detectives
America's History Detectives prove that an object found in an attic or backyard might be anything but ordinary. Tukufu Zuberi, professor of sociology and the director of the Center for Africana Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, Gwendolyn Wright, professor of architecture at Columbia University, Elyse Luray, independent appraiser and expert in art history, and Wesley Cowan, independent appraiser and auctioneer, leave no stone unturned as they travel around the country to explore the stories behind local folklore, prominent figures, and family legends.
Our contributor inherited a watercolor he believes was painted by a soldier, John F. Gisch, during the Civil War. He wants to know more about the artist, John Gisch, and about the painting itself. Wes Cowan learns more about the crucial battle over a strategic vantage point, Lookout Mountain and visits the Rock Island Arsenal Museum to find out more about the lives of soldiers imprisoned there.
