America's History Detectives prove that an object found in an attic or backyard might be anything but ordinary. By the early 19th century, the United States was home to increasing numbers of free blacks, many of whom sailed to West Africa to establish the Republic of Liberia. Our contributor has long been mystified by some old family letters. One letter is from her grandmother's brother, Harvey McLeod, and it suggests that he was heading to Liberia, but did he make it there?
