Last night, the Massachusetts Senate defeated Melissa's Bill, which would have automatically given criminals convicted of a 3rd felony the maximum sentence for the crime. The bill is named after Melissa Gosule, a 27 year-old school teacher who was killed 10 years ago when her car broke down and she accepted a ride from a stranger who raped and murdered her. Her killer, Michael Gentile, had 27 convictions on his record prior to killing Gosule.
