Beethoven wrote this first String Quartet after he began to lose his hearing, so it was a time of anxiety and intense feeling for him. He admired the quartets of Haydn and Mozart, but he was also looking ahead with this music, to the Romantic Era. We hear it played by the Auryn Quartet, from Germany.
