The American Talent Pool, Revisited
We hear a lot about America's failure to educate students in math and science — a problem that, many believe, is stifling innovation and the economy. This May WGBH's Innovation Hub featured a conversation about the dearth of qualified job applicants in the rapidly growing information technology fields.
But not so fast, argues Prof. Hal Salzman. He says that the hand-wringing over math and science education is simply incorrect, and the notion that American education is not producing enough workers in these fields is a myth.
Kara Miller revisits the subject, asking experts about why they believe math and science may not be the keys to the jobs of the future.
Guests:
Shane Lopez, senior scientist at Gallup and architect of the Gallup Student Poll
Prof. Hal Salzman, professor and senior faculty fellow at John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development
Abby Charest, PhD candidate and research assistant at Worcester Polytechnic Institute
