Basic Black Live: Profiling for Terrorists & Cultural Portrayals

Basic Black kicks off 2010 with a look at the thwarted terror attempt on Christmas Day with these questions for thought: does this signal a type of jihadist, anti-Western strain of thought arising among African-born or African American folk? Is this ammunition against the Obama administration? How far does this move domestic issues off the radar (especially important when African Americans are looking at 15% unemployment...) Is this the dawn of a new racial profiling?

We'll also discuss the continuing struggle for accurate cultural portrayals by looking at movies “Precious”, "The Princess and the Frog”, “The Blindside”; and Tyler Perry's forthcoming adaptation of Ntozake Shange's seminal choreopoem "For Colored Girls Who've Considered Suicide..."    (Originally broadcast on January 7, 2010)

Our panel: Callie Crossley, national media commentator; Latoyia Edwards, New England Cable News; Kim McLarin, author, Jump At the Sun; and Peniel Joseph, professor of history, Tufts University.
