Basic Black: 2009 Local Elections & Gay Rights vs. Civil Rights Movement

(Broadcast on November 5, 2009)  Our first topic will be a discussion of the outcome of Massachusetts history making elections in the cities of Boston, Newton, and Lawrence.

For our second discussion, in light of President Obama’s signature of the Hate Crimes Bill and Maine’s defeat of the gay marriage law, we'll explore the notion of gay rights as an extension of the civil rights movement.

Our panelists:  Peniel Joseph, Professor of History, Tufts University; John Barros, Executive Director, Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative; Melissa Nobles, Professor of Political Science, MIT; and Rev. Irene Monroe, Huffington Post blogger and syndicated religion columnist.
