Earlier this week, Charles Ramsey of Cleveland, Ohio rescued three women and a six year old who had been held captive by his neighbor for a decade. But it was the interview Ramsey gave to a reporter on the scene that day that made him an internet sensation. Within hours, he was trending on Twitter and the subject of numerous autotune creations.
But Ramsey's two minute interview (and the later released call he placed to 911) grew into a larger examination of race, class and the media. The stories of the abducted women has rightfully taken center stage, but questions about Ramsey's introduction to the world media remain. (Originally broadcast on April 22, 2010) This week on Basic Black: This month marks the one year anniversary of the death of 11 year-old Carl Walker-Hoover, who committed suicide as a result of being bullied at school. Tonight, we'll look at the impact of bullying and potential solutions to keep children safe. Later, in recognition of Earth Day, we'll discuss the economic and health impacts of environmental racism and activism, as well as the benefits to communities of color of the “green economy.” Our panelists: Kim McLarin, Writer-in-Residence, Emerson College; Peniel Joseph, professor of history, Tufts University; Kalila Barnett, Executive Director of Alternatives for Community and Environment; and Kim McLaurin, associate professor of law, Suffolk Law University.
