The very first Freedom Ride, the Journey of Reconciliation, took place in April 1947, when 16 people tested compliance with the recent Supreme Court decision of Morgan vs. Virginia. The ruling outlawed segregation on interstate bus travel after Irene Morgan refused to give up her bus seat in 1944.
