Revolt And Repression In The Middle East
When the US went to war in Libya last month—Nicholas Burns had a warning: We don’t know what our mission is—or even who the rebels seeking to overthrow Colonel Muammar Gadhafi are. Today Burns’s words of caution look prescient. Attacks by the US and its allies are the only thing keeping Gadhafi from routing the rebels—and it’s not clear when or how we’ll exit the Libyan conflict. What’s more it now seems that—by helping the Libyan rebels—we may also end up helping members of Al Qaeda who’ve embraced the anti-Gadhafi fight. Nicholas Burns is a Professor at Harvard’s Kennedy School and a former US Ambassador to NATO. He also served as Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs from 2005 to 2008. Ambassador Burns and Former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright will be at a free and public forum at Wellesley College tonight at 7:30pm.
