WGBH News’ “Beat the Press” Wins Bart Richards Award for Media Criticism

National award recognizes distinguished analysis of the news, examination of Boston Marathon coverage
 
BOSTON, Mass. (March 21, 2014) – WGBH News’ Beat the Press today won the Bart Richards Award for Media Criticism from the College of Communications at Pennsylvania State University. Beat The Press, part of WGBH News’ “Greater Boston” series, is a weekly television program that examines how news organizations cover major stories. It was recognized for its in-depth discussion and analysis of the media in 2013, including several segments reflecting on coverage of the Boston Marathon.
 
“The Bart Richards Award is validation of our commitment at Beat the Press and WGBH News to dig deeper into the stories we cover and critically examine how the media reports the news. There was an exceptionally strong field of entries this year, and this recognition is the result of a true team effort across editorial, production and our panel of guests,” said Ted Canova, managing director, WGBH News.
 
The national award, established in 1994, recognizes distinguished contributions to the improvement of print and broadcast journalism through responsible analysis or critical evaluation by publishers, editors and reporters. This year’s award recognizes Beat The Press’ programming in 2013, led by host Emily Rooney, executive producer Linda Polach and producer Jeff Keating. It will be presented on May 22, 2014 at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. Past winners include FRONTLINE, produced by WGBH in Boston for national distribution by PBS.
