WGBH’s High School Quiz Show “Super Sunday” Event Welcomes 103 Mass. High Schools to Brighton

Mass. high school academic teams will take quiz to vie for 16 spots in the tournament

BOSTON, October 23, 2017 - On Sunday, November 5, students from 103 high schools from across Massachusetts will compete for a chance to participate on the ninth season of High School Quiz Show®, the Emmy Award- and Parents’ Choice Award-winning program produced and broadcast by WGBH. Billy Costa, local radio and TV personality hosts High School Quiz Show. Costa was recently inducted into the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame. During “Super Sunday,” each academic team of four students will take an identical 50-question oral quiz based on the Massachusetts curriculum and current events.

At this year’s “Super Sunday,” held at WGBH Studios in Brighton, High School Quiz Show staff and volunteers welcome three teams from schools participating in the event for the first time ever: Boston College High School from Boston, MA, Phillips Academy from Andover, MA and St. John’s Preparatory School from Danvers, MA. More than 99 teams will return for another shot at the trophy, including defending Massachusetts state champion Lexington High School.

“Super Sunday brings an incredible energy into WGBH’s Brighton headquarters each November, as some of our state’s most driven students come to demonstrate their knowledge,” said Executive Producer Hillary Wells. “Good luck to each and every team that joins us for the quiz next month!”

The top 16 teams will advance to compete in the televised, single-elimination, bracketed academic tournament that will determine a state champion. The season will culminate for the first time with an Interstate Invitational, with WGBH’s High School Quiz Show state champions competing against New Hampshire Public Television’s (NHPTV) Granite State Challenge state champions, the High School Quiz Show: Rhode Island state champions and the High School Quiz Show: Maine state champions for the final title.

High School Quiz Show begins taping at WGBH in January in front of a studio audience. It will premiere Saturday, February 3, 2018 at 6pm on WGBH 2.
