WGBH Celebrates the Holidays with Music on Radio and Online

Boston, Mass (December 17, 2015) — With the holiday season in full swing, Boston public broadcaster WGBH is engaging with listeners with a slate of seasonal content on 89.7 WGBH and 99.5 WCRB. The musical festivities include perennial favorites and new festive features to accompany audiences’ holiday activities.

Saturday, December 19 and Monday, December 21

8pm: Boston Symphony Orchestra broadcast: Holiday Pops! This performance features many holiday favorites, including ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, narrated by WCRB host Cathy Fuller.

Sunday, December 20

7pm: Peter Philips and the Tallis Scholars, recorded live in concert by 99.5 WCRB at St. Paul Church in Cambridge, MA on Saturday, December 12, 2015.

For over four decades, the legendary singers of The Tallis Scholars and director Peter Phillips have earned worldwide acclaim for performances of unparalleled purity and clarity that beautifully illuminate Renaissance polyphony. The centerpiece is the monumental seven-part Christmas mass of the ensemble’s namesake, Thomas Tallis. Based on the festive plainchant “Puer natus est” (A boy is born), the mass is a breathtaking work of unsurpassed beauty.

10:15pm: Sunday Night Opera: Engelbert Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel.

Thursday, December 24:

4pm: exclusively holiday music – orchestral, chamber and vocal renditions of classics and lesser-known pieces, specially selected for a warm, joyous day of music.

6pm: a few drop-ins from this year’s Holiday Pops

8-10pm: Tchaikovsky’s complete ballet The Nutcracker.

Thursday, Dec. 24

“Christmas Eve with Oedipus”

6pm to midnight on 89.7 WGBH

Legendary Boston radio personality Oedipus offers listeners his annual ‘soundtrack to Christmas’. The Christmas eve program features music that Oedipus has collected throughout the year, culled from the many new holiday offerings. He combines those with his own collection of thousands of recordings to create an eclectic mix of unique songs or interesting interpretations of classics that won’t be played anywhere else. Whether you’re wrapping presents, dancing around the Christmas tree, or engaging in a bit of holiday romance, “Christmas Eve with Oedipus” will provide the soundtrack to the celebration.

Friday, December 25:

11am: Bach’s Magnificat in D

1pm: Handel’s Messiah

5pm: Bach’s Christmas Cantata

Sunday, December 27
