Taste of WGBH: Food & Wine Festival Returns to Brighton

Sample the creations of New England’s best chefs and wineries at WGBH studios from September 17 - 20

New Food Fight event pits 10 chefs in a competition for best taco

Boston, MA (August 25, 2015) – WGBH is bringing New England’s most respected and innovative chefs, wineries and breweries together from September 17-20, 2015 for the fourth annual Taste of WGBH: Food and Wine Festival. Local culinary titans including Jody Adams (Rialto), Mark Sheehan (Loyal Nine), Tru Lang (Journeyman) and Tiffani Faison (Sweet Cheeks) will display their talents at WGBH for a weekend that celebrates the best that the region has to offer in food, wine and more.

Returning to the festival this year is the elegant Chef’s Gala Reception, where guests can taste the best of New England’s fine dining scene in one special evening on September 17. The tasting continues outdoors at the Artisan Taste sessions on September 19 with a Mind of a Chef panel discussion, fine wines and the region’s best restaurants. The Brunch Bar lets guests sample the best of this decadent Sunday event with sweet and savory dishes on September 20. New this year at the Taste of WGBH Food and Wine Festival are several notable events and features. Celebrate the revival of New England’s heritage grains with a dinner at Journeyman in Somerville on September 18. The final event of the festival will throw 10 exceptional chefs into a heated battle to make the best creative taco interpretation at Food Fight on September 20.

1) Chef's Gala Reception: SOLD OUT

Join us for a very special evening featuring the best of the region’s fine dining scene. The Chef’s Gala Reception will feature 24 unique stations showcasing the cuisine of New England’s most highly acclaimed and creative restaurants, paired with premium wines and craft beer. Live music will be provided by Steve Memmolo and the Classic Yellow.

2) Paired Dinners: Brewer’s Heritage Grain Dinner at Journeyman 
Friday, September 18, 2015; Two Seating Times: 5:30pm & 8:30pm
Journeyman Restaurant: 9 Sanborn Court, Somerville, MA 02143

Celebrate New England heritage grain revival, with chefs creatively incorporating ancient varieties of spelt, flint corn and emmer coming from local area farmers. Chef Tru Lang and Journeyman take these ingredients out of supporting roles and highlight the unique qualities of each grain. Each course will be paired with craft beer from Maine’s Oxbow Brewery, and hosted by the brewer, Tim Adams. Two seatings are offered at 5:30pm and 8:30pm, advanced purchase required.

3) The Artisan Taste, Sessions 1 & 2
Saturday, September 19, 2015, 1-4pm & 6-9pm
WGBH Studios Backlot, One Guest Street, Brighton, MA

This outdoor tasting features dishes with seasonal, local ingredients from nearly 30 chefs and premium spirits from around the world. Music will be provided by The Women’s International Music Network featuring Laura Clapp, Post Modern Authors and Kate Diaz. Rialto’s Chef Jody Adams and The Mind of A Chef hosts Chef Gabrielle Hamilton, Chef Edward Lee and series producer/director Michael Steed will provide insight into today’s culinary trends and culture at a panel discussion hosted by FoodRepublic.com Editor, Richard Martin. Additionally, World Pizza Champion Bruno DiFabio of WGBH’s Moveable Feast with Fine Cooking will serve up tips on what makes his pizza a winner, and guests will get to sample his winning pies.

Artisan Taste continues into the evening, showcasing nearly 30 restaurants and a dessert bar of local confections. The event is rounded out by live cooking demos and music by The Dapper Gents and presentation of the first WGBH Culinary Stewardship Award. The award celebrates the chef that best educates on food topics or cooking techniques, inspires others and contributes to the improvement of food quality by investing in a sustainable food supply chain. A panel of food media and industry experts will select the winner at Artisan Taste.

4) Brunch Bar
Sunday, September 20, 2015, 11am-1:30pm
WGBH Studios Backlot, One Guest Street, Brighton, MA
A celebration of all things brunch, Brunch Bar serves up tasting-sized portions of brunch dishes, artisanal cheeses, charcuterie and pastry, as well as champagnes, lighter wines, hard cider and cocktails. Live demos include a wine and cheese pairing from author Adam Centamore and a history of rum and the making of the The Real McCoy documentary. Live music provided by Speechless Jazz.

5) Food Fight
Sunday, September 20, 2015, 3:30-6pm
WGBH Studios Backlot, One Guest Street, Brighton, MA
We cap off a celebratory weekend with Food Fight, giving 10 exceptional chefs the opportunity to show off their culinary creativity. Guests vote on delicious taco interpretations. The event features refreshing craft beer, hard cider and wine poured by 20 purveyors, as well as a featured cocktail from Mezcales de Leyenda to cool things down.

The Taste of WGBH Food & Festival helps to support the educational and cultural programming on WGBH.  Join us to celebrate the spirit of WGBH food television programming, whose mission has been to advance the understanding, appreciation and quality of wine and food, from Julia Child’s The French Chef, to Simply Ming, Moveable Feast with Fine Cooking, Neighborhood Kitchens, The Mind of a Chef and more.
