WGBH News Wins Multiple Honors from Edward R. Murrow Awards

Local public radio news team recognized for investigative series, news documentary, news series and writing broadcasts
 
BOSTON, Mass. (April 22, 2014) –The WGBH News team earned multiple regional radio honors from the 2014 Edward R. Murrow Awards for best investigative series and news documentary. WCAI, WGBH’s listener-supported station for Cape Cod, the coast and the islands and a contributor to the WGBH News team, also received honors for news series and writing. Each year, the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) honors outstanding achievements in electronic journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Awards. RTDNA announced regional winners today. All regional winners are automatically entered into the national competition. The national honorees will be announced in June.

Murrow Awards reinforces that WGBH News is one of the leading newsrooms in New England committed to unearthing compelling stories that affect our region,” said WGBH News Director Ted Canova. “It is an honor to work with such a talented team that consistently produces such quality content for our listeners.”
 
Led by reporting from senior reporter Phillip Martin, a past Murrow Award recipient, the special report “Underground Trade” won for Best Investigative Series. The eight-part series traveled from Boston to New York and East Asia to cover the modern slave trade of human trafficking. The series was produced in cooperation with the Schuster Institute for Investigative Journalism at Brandeis University and the International Center for Journalists. WGBH News Director Ted Canova edited the series. Brendan Lynch designed a companion web experience and Meredith Nierman contributed photography assets.
 
WGBH’s radio program on the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington, written and produced by Callie Crossley, and hosted by Crossley and Bob Seay, won for Best News Documentary. The documentary included original public radio recordings preserved by WGBH’s Media Library and Archives. WGBH was one of five public radio stations to cover the march in 1963 as a part of the National Education Radio Network, a precursor to NPR.
 
WCAI won for news series reporting for The Long Haul and the future of fisheries in New England, and Robert Finch’s piece “A Weapon to Take Out Squirrels,” picked up the award for writing.

The recognition from the Murrow Awards is the latest in a string of honors given to the WGBH News team, including wins from the AP Awards for Massachusetts and Rhode Island for radio coverage, as well as the top honor from the Bart Richards Award for Media Criticism for the weekly TV series, Beat the Press. The WGBH News team draws on the talent of a multi-platform newsroom that includes radio, television and digital reporting. The WGBH newsroom, which has grown and evolved over the last three years, continues to invest in quality, substantive local coverage. In the last year, WGBH News established a higher education desk, On Campus, devoted to covering university news and trends in Boston and beyond, forged a unique partnership with Boston University’s New England Center for Investigative Reporting and debuted a regular web series, The Scrum, that gives an insider’s look at Boston and Massachusetts politics.
