Sixteen Massachusetts High Schools Matched Up in Season Five High School Quiz Show Tournament

WGBH releases bracket with match ups and episode airing dates
Series begins taping January 25
BOSTON, Mass. (January 7, 2014) –WGBH unveiled today the official bracket for the 2014 High School Quiz Show tournament. The seeded, 16-team, single-elimination tournament is produced and broadcast by WGBH and hosted by Billy Costa. The competing teams emerged from a field of more than 95 high schools and includes four teams competing in the televised contest for the first time, one former state champion and one high school that has earned a spot in the tournament each of the five years WGBH has produced the program.
“Massachusetts public schools are among the best in the country, and we are very excited to give our students and teachers a stage that celebrates education,” said Executive Producer Hillary Wells.“Public media is uniquely positioned to complement the lessons taught in our schools. For the last five years, WGBH has been proud that High School Quiz Show has been a part of that commitment.”

The 2014 High School Quiz Show team matchups and corresponding episode premiere dates follow. All episodes premiere Saturdays at 6pm on WGBH 2:

·  Longmeadow vs. Acton-Boxborough                                      March 22
·  Dartmouth vs. Arlington                                                              March 29
WGBH will begin taping first-round playoffs the weekend of Saturday, January 25 and Sunday, January 26 in front of a studio audience at WGBH Studios in Brighton. Tickets are free, but an RSVP is required. Media is invited to cover the tapings and must make arrangements with WGBH’s Regina Daley (regina_daley@wgbh.org).
Following the state championship, the winning school will compete in the second annual Governor’s Cup Challenge, a match up between WGBH’s High School Quiz Show Massachusetts state champion and NHPTV’s Granite State Challenge New Hampshire state champion.
High School Quiz aligns with the Massachusetts high school curriculum standards in subjects that include literature, history, science and math, as well as current events and general knowledge. 
High School Quiz Showis part of WGBH’s long-standing commitment to serving the Commonwealth’s educational efforts.
