ABC News veteran McCarthy Zachry joins as news director for growing multi-channel local newsroom

Schachter brings radio expertise from PRI’s The World as executive producer and editor for WGBH Radio

BOSTON, Mass. (September 16, 2015) WGBH Radio general manager Phil Redo today announced that Kate McCarthy Zachry will join the WGBH News team as News Director. He also announced that Aaron Schachter of PRI’s The World will join WGBH News in a newly created position as Executive Producer and Editor for WGBH Radio, reporting to McCarthy Zachry.

McCarthy Zachry comes to WGBH News from ABC News in New York where she has held a number of positions over the last eight years, most recently as editorial producer for This Week with George Stephanopolous. In this role she also produced breaking news and special events for the show. Prior to that she served as a producer and digital producer for Good Morning America.

“Kate is an exceptionally talented journalist with deep and relevant experience. She brings to our newsroom a passion for storytelling and a vision for how WGBH News can continue to improve and grow as a public media leader,” said Redo.

She previously worked for Thomson Reuters as a digital producer and began her career at C-SPAN on the White House beat. She was honored as a Carnegie Fellow in 2007.

McCarthy Zachry has an M.S. In Journalism from Columbia University and was awarded the Women’s International Leadership Fellowship. She earned her B.A. in International Affairs with a Spanish Minor at George Washington University. She is a Massachusetts native and resides in Jamaica Plain with her husband and son.

“I am honored to have been selected as news director. I look forward to joining the strong team at WGBH News and it's especially gratifying to start another chapter in my hometown” said McCarthy Zachry.

Adding to the deep roster of talent in WGBH’s growing newsroom, Schachter will focus on content development for WGBH radio. He also will help execute the overall strategy for coverage across all WGBH News platforms. Schachter comes to the newsroom after having spent more than 12 years with PRI’s The World. During his tenure there, he served in a number of roles, including editor, host and Middle East correspondent.

Before joining The World, he served as editor, reporter and host of the Marketplace Morning Report and as a reporter for the Los Angeles bureau of NPR. His local radio experience includes three years as an education reporter and on-air host at Colorado Public Radio in Denver. Schachter began his career as a State House reporter in Boston.

His work has won both a DuPont-Columbia Award and a Scripps Howard Excellence in Electronic Media Award. He holds a B.A. in Journalism from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and resides in Holliston.

“The WGBH News team has worked closely with Aaron on several stories with global-local impact during his time at PRI’s The World. He has been a respected collaborator and supporter of our local coverage, and he brings significant editorial experience and skill for narrative audio craftsmanship that will be a valuable asset for our radio coverage,” said Redo.
