WGBH's High School Quiz Show Announces Season 9 Bracket

WGBH releases team matchups and episode schedule

Series begins taping January 20 and premieres February 3 on WGBH 2

BOSTON (January 8, 2018) WGBH has revealed the official matchup bracket for the 2018 High School Quiz Show tournament. The single-elimination competition is produced and broadcast by WGBH and hosted by Billy Costa. Sixteen Massachusetts high school student teams advanced from a pool of 99 schools to compete in the televised academic tournament. The schools competing on High School Quiz Show earned the highest scores on an oral quiz at WGBH’s “Super Sunday” qualifying event at WGBH studios in Brighton, MA. The season nine field includes two-time defending state champion, Lexington High School and four schools that will appear on the show for the first time: Foxborough High School, Mansfield High School, Phillips Academy and South High Community School.

“We have an exciting set of matches on the bracket this year, including a faceoff between two former champions and a newcomer versus newcomer showdown later in the season,” said High School Quiz Show Executive Producer Hillary Wells. “We all look forward to seeing the passion and academic skill that each team brings to High School Quiz Show season nine!"

WGBH will begin taping first-round playoffs the weekend of Saturday, January 20 and Sunday, January 21 in front of a studio audience at WGBH Studios in Brighton. Tickets are free, but an RSVP is required. Media is invited to cover the tapings and should make arrangements with WGBH Media Relations Manager Emily Balk (emily_balk@wgbh.org).

High School Quiz Show will premiere Saturday, February 3 at 6pm on WGBH 2.

The season will culminate for the first time with an Interstate Invitational, featuring WGBH’s High School Quiz Show state champions competing against New Hampshire PBS’ Granite State Challenge state championsthe High School Quiz Show: Rhode Island state champions and the High School Quiz Show: Maine state champions for the final title.

Season 9 of High School Quiz Show is dedicated to the late Mitchell Chester, the former Massachusetts Commissioner for Elementary and Secondary Education. Chester was a strong advocate for celebrating the academic achievement of all Massachusetts high school students and was a passionate champion and dedicated advisor of High School Quiz Show since its inception.
