Sixteen Massachusetts High Schools to Compete on Ninth Season of WGBH’s High School Quiz Show

Four schools advance to the televised academic competition for the first time

Season 9 dedicated to the late Mitchell Chester, former Massachusetts Commissioner for Elementary and Secondary Education

BOSTON, November 13, 2017 – WGBH’s High School Quiz Show has announced the sixteen teams from across Massachusetts to compete on the ninth season of WGBH’s televised academic tournament. The schools that received the 16 highest scores on an oral quiz at the Super Sunday qualifying event held earlier this month at WGBH’s studios will move on to the next phase of the competition. Among the top 16 is two-time defending state champion, Lexington High School and four schools that will appear on the show for the first time: Foxborough High School, Mansfield High School, Phillips Academy and South High Community School.

“Congratulations to the schools advancing in the High School Quiz Show competition and thank you to all of the schools that came to Super Sunday!” said host Billy Costa. “Each year I look forward to seeing Quiz Show veterans again and to welcoming new participants at the tapings, and this year is no exception. I’ll see you in January! ”

WGBH made the official announcement on the High School Quiz Show website today. The schools that will compete for the state title are:

·       Advanced Math & Science Academy (Marlborough, MA)

·       Andover High School

·       Belmont High School

·       Bromfield School (Harvard, MA)

·       Brookline High School

·       Foxborough High School

·       Hingham High School

·       Lexington High School

·       Mansfield High School

·       Natick High School

·       Needham High School

·       Newton North High School

·       Phillips Academy (Andover, MA)

·       South High Community School (Worcester, MA)

·       Thayer Academy (Braintree, MA)

·       Wellesley High School

The top 16 teams will advance to compete in the televised, single-elimination, bracketed academic tournament that will determine a state champion. The season will culminate for the first time with an interstate Invitational, featuring WGBH’s High School Quiz Show state champions competing against New Hampshire PBS’ Granite State Challenge state champions, the High School Quiz Show: Rhode Island state champions and the High School Quiz Show: Maine state champions for the final title.
High School Quiz Show begins taping at WGBH in January in front of a studio audience. It will premiere Saturday, February 3 at 6pm on WGBH 2.

Season 9 of High School Quiz Show is dedicated to the late Mitchell Chester, the former Massachusetts Commissioner for Elementary and Secondary Education. Chester was a strong advocate for celebrating the academic achievement of all Massachusetts high school students and was a passionate champion and dedicated advisor of High School Quiz Show since its inception.

Questions on the show are aligned with the Massachusetts high school curriculum standards in subjects that include literature, history, science and math, as well as current events and general knowledge.
