Acton-Boxborough wins 2014 High School Quiz Show State Championship

BOSTON, Mass. (May 24, 2014) WGBH’s High School Quiz Show crowned Acton-Boxborough Regional High School the 2014 season five State Champion on Saturday, May 24. This is Acton-Boxborough’s first championship title on WGBH’s award-winning tournament.

“A well-deserved congratulations to Acton-Boxborough,” said WGBH President and CEO Jon Abbott. “The academic acumen demonstrated by Spencer, Tom, Kevin and Victor is a testament to their dedication to mastering an impressive range of knowledge. I am proud that High School Quiz Show serves as a platform to broadcast the great talent among Massachusetts students.”

Acton-Boxborough sophomore Spencer and seniors Tom, Kevin and Victor represented their school as teammates throughout season five, coached by teachers Susan Ervais-Bohmiller and Ronna Berman-Byam. Tom and Victor both returned on the show for a third time. Tom’s favorite subject is literature and he plays the snare drum in school-sponsored and independent ensembles. Victor’s favorite subjects are history and geography, and he also plays the piano and tuba. This was Spencer’s second year on High School Quiz Show. He also participates on three other academic teams. Kevin, whose favorite subjects are history and English, has recently taken up archery. Jeffrey and Sarang served as alternates. (WGBH policy does not allow the release of minors’ full names.)

Hosted by Billy Costa, WGBH’s High School Quiz Show’s fifth season kicked off last November with the “Super Sunday” qualifying event, where more than 95 MA public high schools took an identical 100-question oral quiz at WGBH Studios. Sixteen public high schools advanced to the televised weekly tournament.

The championship was followed by the broadcast of New Hampshire Public Television’s Governor’s Cup Challenge. High School Quiz Show Massachusetts champion Acton-Boxborough Regional High School took on New Hampshire Public Television’s Granite State Challenge champion, Pinkerton Academy. The team from Pinkerton Academy ultimately came out ahead to win the Governor’s Cup. This year’s Governor’s Cup matchup was hosted by NHPTV and played under the GSC game format.

High School Quiz Show is part of WGBH’s long-standing commitment to serving the Commonwealth’s educational efforts. In addition to its public broadcast commitment, WGBH serves as Massachusetts’ digital media partner on two ambitious federally-supported Race to the Top initiatives aimed at reshaping learning for the 21st century. In 2002, WGBH created Teachers’ Domain, which is cited as the foundation for what is now PBS LearningMedia, a national broadband service for teachers and students.

High School Quiz Show is endorsed by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education and the Massachusetts PTA. The Princeton Review judges the televised competition and reviews the program’s questions. Questions on the show are aligned with the Massachusetts high school curriculum standards in subjects that include literature, history, science and math, as well as current events and general knowledge. Major funding for High School Quiz Show is provided by Safety Insurance and the Bank of America Charitable Foundation. Additional funding is provided by Massachusetts Teachers Association, XFINITY from Comcast, Harvard Summer School Secondary School Program, Bentley University, Subaru of New England and the WGBH Children’s Educational Media Fund.
