For most professional firefighters, fighting fires is their full-time occupation. But a few Boston firefighters have used the practice of shift-swapping to run personal businesses — almost to the point where firefighting has become their secondary occupation. That’s one element of The Boston Globe’s front page report yesterday about how some Boston firefighters are abusing shift-swapping — and the added cost to taxpayers that comes with it. With me now on the phone to explain the details is Walter Robinson, the former Globe Spotlight editor, and now a journalism professor at Northeastern. Robinson oversaw the reporting for yesterday’s story, much of which was done by his students at Northeastern.
