Asian Longhorned Beetle Invasion
Recently, six trees in Jamaica Plain had to be removed because of Asian Longhorned Beetle infestation. Over the next few weeks, the US Department of Agriculture will inoculate 3,200 trees in the Boston area. A 10 sq. mile quarantine has been put into effect in the area. This pales in comparison to the Worcester area, where 30,000 infested trees have been removed and 98 sq. miles are quarantined because of these pesky pests. The infestation has costed the government millions of dollars and is taking years to treat.
Today, we look at why the Asian Longhorn Beetle is such a threat, why it continues to spread, what treatments are in place to rid our trees of the beetle once and for all, and what you can do if you find the beetle in your own back yard.
