Media and Medicine
As part of WGBH's focus week on health care, we're looking at media and medicine. Medicine and has long been a staple for film and TV. It comes with built-in drama. Issues of life and death, doctor-patient relationships, and doctor-nurse romances tap into the spectrum of our emotional range. They give us the juicy plots that pop culture consumers are accustomed to. But look a little closer and these medical dramas, from the television series "ER" and "Nurse Jackie", to the film "Philadelphia", tell us something about our healthcare system. We see the doctor as God, and flawed. We see the the debate over end of life issues made painfully real. We see what it means to not have access to health care. We'll examine our healthe care system through the lens of TV and film.
