Doing the Maps
We’re talking about redistricting today. Every 10 years lawmakers redraw the state’s districts. In theory it should benefit the people, but in practice it’s usually our politicians who reap the rewards. In Massachusetts, it conjures up some tainted associations --like Thomas Finneran, the former Speaker of House was tried for trying to weaken minority voting power. But this time around a statewide collaboration worked to make sure minorities got a fair shake. Now that the Bay State’s House and Senate redistricting maps have been delivered, signed, and sealed—advocates and activists are cautiously optimistic about the process and end results. We’ll look at what these redistricting maps mean for civil rights and our electoral process.
We’ll be joined by State Senator Sonia Chang-Diaz, New Democracy Coalition at Boston University founder and director Kevin Peterson, and Oiste executive director Alejandra St. Guillen.
