Local Made Good: ZUMIX
ZUMIX got its start in 1991 as a summer program where East Boston students would learn an instrument, play in a band, and chill with like-minded kids. The program was so successful it went from just a summer thing to a year-round destination for young East Boston artists to drop by on a daily basis. In 2001 ZUMIX expanded into its current home - a completely rehabbed fire station - and bolstered its offerings by including poetry, audio engineering, music videos, radio and anything else the kids came up with.
Earlier this month ZUMIX beat out 471 other youth programs around the country to win one of twelve National Arts & Humanities Youth Program Awards. Co-founder Madeleine Steczynski and Ixchel Garcia, a longtime ZUMIX student, traveled to the White House to meet First Lady Michelle Obama and accept the award on behalf of ZUMIX. They're here to talk to us about the program and their once-in-a-lifetime experience.
