More than Wheels
More Than Wheels was started in 2001 by two New Hampshire car salesmen. Robert Chambers and Leo Hamill saw that car buyers with bad credit and finances were taking out credit lines that were borderline usurious. They were desperate to get to work, run errands and get family members where they needed to be, and they were willing to do just about anything.
Enter More Than Wheels. The small nonprofit began offering low-interest loans to customers in tight financial situations. They negotiated with car dealers on customers' behalf to buy smooth-running, fuel-efficient cars. And most importantly, they counseled them on their credit, about getting debt in order and establishing a financial plan. And they keep at it, month after month, year after year, till customers are back on their feet. More Than Wheels has been such a success that it's been expanded into metro Boston to serve a whole other customer base.
Here to talk about the program today are More Than Wheels CEO, Terri Steingrebe, and Tammy Trahan, a client of the program. They were both profiled in the New York Times.
