Internationally renowned cellist and WGBH supporter Yo-Yo Ma (born Oct. 7, 1955) attended the Juilliard School of Music before enrolling at Harvard University. Ma, who is best known for his recordings and performances of the Bach Cello Suites, founded the Silk Road Ensemble in 1998 to unite musicians from the diverse countries historically linked by the Silk Road trading route. In addition to his classical repertoire, Ma has recorded in bluegrass, traditional Chinese, tango, and minimalist styles. In this interview with WGBH 89.7 classical hosts Cathy Fuller and Richard Knisely, Ma discusses his approach to performing music of all kinds and shares his thoughts on the current state of classical music.
