Dawn Upshaw

American soprano Dawn Upshaw (born July 17, 1960) gained international recognition in 1993 for her recording of Henryk Gorecki's Symphony No. 3, the "Symphony of Sorrowful Songs," with conductor David Zinman. Upshaw performs in both opera and art song, and her repertoire ranges from Baroque to contemporary. She has been a muse for many composers, including John Harbison of Boston's Emmanuel Music and Osvaldo Golijov of the Boston Conservatory. In this interview with WGBH 89.7 classical hosts Cathy Fuller and Richard Knisely, Upshaw discusses her life in music and the state of classical music in our culture.
