Haydn originally wrote his "Seven Last Words of Christ" as an oratorio for the cathedral at the Spanish port city of Cadiz. It was intended to be heard at the Good Friday Service, in between readings and discourses on each of the seven last statements of Christ on the Cross. We hear five movements in this abbreviated version.
