Modest Mussorgsky had a lively interest in folk art. It was an interest he shared with his friend Victor Hartmann, a brilliant young artist who died unexpectedly in 1873. Mussorgsky was devastaed by the loss of his friend and wrote this work after a visit to a memorial exhibition of Hartmann's paintings.
