Pianist Simone Dinnerstein's interpretations of music by J.S. Bach have captivated listeners since her 2007 release of the Goldberg Variations. Now she returns to Bach's music, but on a more intimate scale through the Inventions and Sinfonias.
To say that an artist considers Bach's music to be at the center of his or her understanding of music is far from uncommon. But in the case of Simone Dinnerstein, Bach has propelled her career as a pianist and helped to define her musical personality before the wider public.
After the runaway success of her Goldberg Variations recording, she released additional explorations of Bach through a set of concertos and chorale preludes. Other solo works were released, including partitas and suites, in illuminating pairings with works by other composers.
With her newest release, Simone Dinnerstein delves into a set of music with a very personal connection. As you can hear in a conversation between Dinnerstein and WCRB's Brian McCreath (click on "Listen" above), the Inventions and Sinfonias constitute some of the pianist's earliest experiences with Bach. It's a fitting memory, as Bach's original purpose in writing the collections, short solo keyboard works with two and three voices, respectively, was to teach young musicians technique, counterpoint, and musicianship.
As with all of her performances of Bach's music, Dinnerstein approaches the Inventions and Sinfonias with an eye to their sparking brilliance, but also by exploring their emotional power. The colors she draws from her instrument are rich, deep, and resonant. You can hear those qualities throughout the week. Tune in to 99.5 WCRB to hear Simone Dinnerstein's Inventions and Sinfonias.
