BOSTON — Arrested members of Occupy Boston were greeted as heroes at a Dec. 10 meeting held on the Boston Common to debate next steps for the nearly three-month-old movement, which lost its foothold in Dewey Square this weekend.
Boston Police shut down the camp at 5:00 a.m. on Dec. 10 and arrested 46 protesters.
The sweep was not entirely unexpected. Boston mayor Thomas Menino had given Occupy Boston activists until midnight Thursday to clear out the encampment. When the squad cars arrived, a group of diehard demonstrators locked arms and resisted peacefully.
“As we moved in, the protestors were sitting down, not putting up much of a fight,” said Boston police superintendent William Evans. The process was, he said, "very orderly. Very methodical. Nobody was injured and there was no confrontation whatsoever."
The Boston Common meeting that evening drew 300 or so activists. They said that although they were evicted, they will continue to fight against income inequality.
