Dos Mujeres (Salvadora y Herminia), 1928, Frida Kahlo

The WGBH-produced Open Studio with Jared Bowen looks at a new acquisition by The Museum of Fine Arts. Dos Mujeres (Salvadora y Herminia) (1928) by Frida Kahlo depicts two native Mexican women set against dense tropical foliage. Held privately in the United States since 1929—when it was purchased directly from the artist—the portrait was the first painting ever sold by Kahlo. It is now the first work by the artist to enter the Museum’s collection.

WGBH presents a special edition of Open Studio with Jared Bowen devoted to an exploration of the current upheavals on the Boston theater landscape. What fate awaits the Colonial Theatre? Where and how will Boston Lyric Opera and the Huntington Theatre Company find new homes? What are the economic implications for the arts community? Competition for resources, changes in audience habits, and the loss of major sponsors are just a few of the factors contributing to the uncertainty. Open Studio brings the major players together in public conversation for the first time: Julie Burros, Chief of Arts and Culture for the City of Boston; Esther Nelson, Artistic Director for the Boston Lyric Opera; Michael Maso, Managing Director of the Huntington Theatre; and Lee Pelton (invited), President of Emerson College.
