Old Ironsides Sails Again

Yesterday "Old Ironsides" set sail again after spending two years in Dry Dock 1, the second oldest (by seven days) dry dock in the country.  During this period copper sheathing, engraved with nearly 100,000 signatures of visitors to the USS Constitution Museum, was installed along with other preservation work.  This restoration is chronicled at Restoring an Icon written in conjunction with the Naval History & Heritage Command Detachment Boston, the civilian arm of historians and restorers responsible for the preservation of "Old Ironsides."

USS Constitution, America’s Ship of State, actively defended sea lanes against global threats from 1797-1855. Now a featured destination on Boston’s Freedom Trail, Constitution and her crew of active duty U.S. Navy sailors offer community outreach and education about the ship's history and the importance of naval sea power to more than 500,000 visitors each year. The last remaining of six frigates that were the beginning of the U.S. Navy, Constitution is the oldest commissioned warship afloat and can be viewed at the Charlestown Navy Yard.
