History Restored: The African Meeting House | Boston, MA (part 4)

by Bridgit Brown

Shawmut Construction and Design is a national firm that was hired by the Museum of African American history to manage the renovation of the African Meeting House. Funded entirely by a $4 million American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grant of the Federal Domestic Assistance Program, the restoration upgraded the meeting house’s electrical and heating systems, installed new lamps and pews, and even allowed for the replacement of the 200-year-old horsehair plaster on the walls with wire mesh to satisfy federal building and safety code regulations.

The story ends tomorrow with the rededication and public opening of the restored African Meeting House.
