By Laura Carlo
This English composer was born this date, 1872, and died in August of 1958, before I was even born, so I always thought it was cruel fate that Ralph Vaughan Williams and I never got a chance to meet. Regardless of the mores of the times had we met I think I would have proposed marriage to him. His music speaks to me more than that of any other composer (and you know I love the music of too many others to name here so that should tell you something). Today marks Vaughan Williams’ birthday. Join me for some of his most endearing pieces, sprinkled throughout my show. Meanwhile you can learn more about his life and works from the Ralph Vaughan Williams Society.
